The Sloth in the Tree: Week 2 Story

Image
My Portfolio Have you ever wondered where sloths come from......... Classroom Ring! Ring! Ring! The bells of Woodland Hills Elementary sounded! All the teachers are aligned in the hallways waiting to meet their new students. I happen to be one of those teachers. I go by Mrs.Pointer. This year I am teaching 4th grade. I hope this year goes a little  more smooth than last year. The kids were very unruly. They simply did not listen. I opened the door to the classroom and the kids took their seats. It is always funny to see them trying to sit next to their friends. The class suddenly became really loud and I tried to quite them down but it was  not working. In my mind I thought to myself, can I have a peaceful year of work? Then suddenly the little wiseman appeared. He said,"I hear your wish. Would you like me to grant your request? How about a landscaper? Plants are not unruly." I was excited to become a professional landscaper. Plants do not disrespect you.

Reading Notes: Myth-Folklore Anthology

I chose to take notes Origin Stories:The Moon. In the overview, It mentions how different cultures have different approaches to how things are made. It is always interesting to me to see the creativity in some of the stories. The Man in the Moon story was interesting to read because the man started out as a blacksmith. He complained and was granted to turn into a rock. His complaints were endless and he turned into multiple things until the wiseman told him he has to stay being the moon. If I were to re-write this story I would use the same story line but just change the things he turn into. I have always had this weird obsession with sloths. I think it would be cool to talk about how the sloths were made in a mythological way. I am probably going to start the character off as a teacher and have him complain about how bad the students are. Next, I am going to have him turn into a landscaper  because he wants peace and then he turns into fish because landscaping made him thirsty a

Reading Notes: Nigeria Myths EXTRA CREDIT

Image
Of the Pretty stranger who Killed the King notes: The main character is MBOTU a famous king of Old Town, Calabar. He had many enemies and they wanted to kill him but they couldn't. The people of the town was not strong enough. Therefore they found a witch that could turn herself into anything she wanted. This reminds me of situations we have today within out presidential and governmental system. There are always a group of people who are not pleased with decisions made during elections or even after elections. They may not be satisfied with the decisions the president makes. I am thinking I may choose a past President of the United States and have one of the citizens that want to kill the President to turn into the Vice-President or someone who does not pose a threat to the President. It would be a cool idea to maybe have multiple people running for Vice-President and have the one he likes the most, turn on him. The king became aware of the witch because of how beautiful she wa

Mythology Reading Options: Part A

Unit Nigeria   leopard Unit Nigeria caught my attention because I just completed my capstone over countries in Africa and Nigeria was one of them. The story that particularly intrigued me is The Fish and the Leopard's Wife. I think it is funny how the fish is a great friend of the leopard. Considering how today, a cat/leopard is known to kill fish. Maybe this story will give me the inside scoop on why cats/leopard's have a like to kill fish!    Unit: Bible Women Abraham, Sarah, and the Angel, by Jan Provoost Unit : Bible women caught my attention because it is familiar to me. I grew up in a christian house-hold. So, some of these stories are familiar to me. The story that I find interesting the most is the story of Sarah. I think it is mind-blowing that Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born unto him. Considering what I know about human anatomy, that is quite impressive.  Unit: Egyptian Myths Unit : Egyptian Myths seems interest

Time Strategies !

Image
Time management  TIME MANAGEMENT, TIME MANAGEMENT, TIME MANAGEMENT ! I believe to be successful in this class you have to manage your time very well ! It will be best for me to do my readings in the morning and do my work on Fridays and the weekends. I work Monday through Thursdays. The weekly calendar will be my best friend to stay organized this semester. Procrastination is the worse thing a student can do in this class ! Peter Banerja made a statement about making a list of priorities and choosing was is the biggest priority today and complete those! If there is free time, complete other priorities. The articles I read was  11 Ways Unsuccessful People Mismanage Their Time   and  4 Questions to Help You Overcome Procrastination .  My biggest challenge will be how gauging how long it will take me to be creative and come up with a story. Last year, I found myself changing how I wanted to tell the story and starting over a story that I already stated which can take some

Technology Landscape

Image
My first impressions of the technology landscape are class wiki is going to be an important tool to use to be successful in this class. Class wiki is literally the layout of the class which is great because we can see exactly what material we need to complete. The writing laboratory will probably be my best friend. One of my weaknesses is grammar. Hopefully, I can improve greatly this semester in that area by utilizing this website. I am familiar with google docs! I have used that website for most of my classes. This class outline is definitely different from my other classes because of the freedom it has. However, even with freedom we will be able to learn a lot about mythical tales. Web navigation is something that I want to work on this semester. I would like to be able to use the web in a more efficient way to maximize my time on assignments.  Technology Savvy

Thoughts on Assignments

Image
Let's Learn My overall thoughts about the setup of this class are, the readings are supper important because it will be the foundation of the story book we will create. I think it will be great to see how my classmates and myself will remake the stories we read each week.  The blog comments are also important. I once had an online class and did not have to leave comments on other students posts. I thought it was weird because I did not connect with my classmates. Feedback from classmates can help tremendously.  I think the extra credit it pretty cool! Many teachers do not offer extra credit like this! Let's take advantage of it ! I am most intrigued by the story book assignments because we get to be creative and use our imagination.

Growth Mindset

Image
I enjoyed watching  "Carol Dweck TED Talk, "The Power of Believing That You Can Improve".  The video helped me think about how our school system does have a flaw. I like the concept of "not yet" because the phrase "not yet" still gives an individual some hope that they can still learn. Rather than telling an individual, "you fail". I agree with Carol when she mentions that we shouldn't cheat ourselves by always celebrating the fact that we got a good grade because of knowledge we already have on a certain subject. We should be excited when presented with challenges and endure through them to learn more. Knowledge is Power I personally have always seemed to have a growth mindset. I love to learn new things. However, there is a part of me that has taken an easier way out before and have taken a class that I already knew plenty about and received an A. I did not learn that much new material but I go the grade that I wanted. I feel

Taylor’s Introduction !

Image
Hello bloggers! My name is Taylor Calvert and I am a senior in the College of Arts and Sciences. My majors are General Science, Pre-Pharmacy and a Spanish minor. The coolest thing about my major is I am learning about the human body everyday. I personally think everyone needs to know more about the human body to properly take care of themselves. The cool thing about having a Spanish minor is being able to communicate with a larger audience. The best class I took when considering science is Human Anatomy because I learned so much about the human body hands on. I was grateful to have the opportunity to work on a cadaver, to see what the inside of our bodies really look like. I absolutely love to cook and to garden in my spare time! Ever since I was a little girl I have always loved flowers. My grandmother and I would always spend time gardening together. My favorite flowers are Hibiscus flowers and Roses. Both of these flowers have a wonderful fragrance. Outside of gardening you

Storybook Favorites: Lost in Children's Nursery Rhymes !

Image
The first Story book I enjoyed reading about is the " The Children's Biblical Zoo "  by Kelsie Heitman. I was drawn to this story book because of how well she incorporated the children's graphics with her story book. The font that she used is a good detail as well. Her introduction is a little wordy. However, I think that it does prepare the reader for the stories in her storybook. I will incorporate that technique in my book. The layout of the story book is easy to navigate                                              The second storybook I chose is called  Novel Nursery Rhymes   by Jacob. I like the personal touch he put on the story book. In his introduction he talks about how he wants to share his childhood with the audience. His aim is to make the audience laugh, smile and enter the world of imagination. I think that is a great way to keep the audience coming back for more. In every nursery rhyme he used, he incorporated a snippet of the actual nursery rhyme.

New Orleans.... My favorite place

Image
I have grown up in Louisiana and Oklahoma for the majority of my life. Louisiana, to this day is my favorite place. I have not found another place like it. Most of my family reside there and the culture is so rich. Not to mention, in  my opinion we have the best food in the country! One of my favorite places in Louisiana is New Orleans. Every time I go, I make an effort to get beignets and coffee at Cafe Du Monde ! I could go on and on about the amazing features of New Orleans like Mardi Gras, Essence Festival, Jazz Festival, French Quarters. Café Du Monde One of my favorite times in New Orleans was Mardi Gras 2012. I went to the Zulu Ball with my family and had a Ball! Lol! We danced, ate food all night long, watched many performances and saw the Zulu King and Queen be crowned. If you have not experienced the Zulu Ball before, I will attach a video for you to get a taste of the "Pre-Party" as we would say, which is the Zulu Parade.  Zulu Parade 2018
