Reading Notes B: Manabush and the Great Fish

Image
I decided to read  Manabush and the Great Fish  this story was edited by Katherine Berry Judson (1914). This story comes from  Myths and Legends of the Mississippi Valley and the Great Lakes  . Manabush had a brother named Wolf who died. However, he realized that a he was not alone. There were children of Nokomis who were his aunts and uncles. The evil manidoes annoyed the people and Manabush wanted to kill them. I remember in the past stories the manidoes was the reason why his brother died. So, they have bad blood. The evil manidoes (Anamaqkiu) would not let any of the people near the water. So Manabush approached the chief and said he will destroy him but the smaller manidoes came and made the water return quickly and they all disappeared. Manabush then went and created a canoe and yelled for the Great Fish to come and swallow him. The Great Fish did just that ! He looked around and many of his family members were inside of the fish. Lol! Manabush then created a hole in the

Reading Notes A: Manabozho and West

Image
The story that I am going to read is  Manabozho and West  edited by Katherine Berry Judson (1914). This story comes from  Myths and Legends of the Mississippi Valley and the Great Lakes . Manabozoho is a boy who lived with his grandmother. One day he heard the noise of an owl and he asked his grandmother what the noise was and she said it was a bird. He thought to himself how is his grandmother is so wise. Then he realized he did not have a mother. At this point of the story I began to think about the episode of SpongeBob when he would always run to his grandmothers house for her cookies. I wonder if I could combine these two stories together. His grandmother Nokomis told him his mother died when he was young and that his father is West and his three brothers are North, East, and South. I was surprised when the story mentioned Manabozo wanted to visit/ punish his father for not being kind to his mother. He pretended to be glad when he ran into his father. His father told him hi

The Coming of Manabush : Reading Notes B

The Coming of Manabush Story  : edited by Katharine Berry Judson (1914). I absolutely loved "The Great Flood" story about Manabush and this story is about the same situation. I wanted to read more about what happens! The Manidoes who killed his brother are called "Underground People" in this story. The daughter of Nokomis died. Nokomis also have a son, who she wrapped and laid on the ground under a wooden bowl. She mourned for 4 days. She heard a noise in her wigwam and she found a little Rabbit who she called Manabush. She then took care of him. One day the Rabbit began to hop around the earth shook. This woke up the evil underground spirits. Anamaqkiu began to plot against Manabush. So, this story was much shorter than I expected to be but that is also a great thing. In my Reading Notes part A I made Manabush Spongebobs pet snail Gary. I am going to keep that theme. So essentially I will be telling the birth of Gary! I can do so much with this story! I p

The Great Flood : Reading Notes A

Normally I would not read stories that are challenging to pronounce the character names. I decided to give this story a try. I found this story to be interesting. Quick Vocabulary.  Menomini people call themselves Mamaceqtaw which means "the people"  Manoominii means "wild rice people"  Manabush the trickster also known as Nanabozho A good thing to know is prior to the events in this story Manabush had a twin brother who was killed by manidoes " bad spirits" .  To get revenge Manabush invented a ball game where Anamaqkiu (who destroyed his brother) and the Thunderers played against each other. There is obvious conflict here and I think I could create a conflict between Spongebob and Plankton in the next story and possibly have Plankton be the one that destroyed Spongebobs pet snail known as Gary. Spongebob would be the creator of the ball game that would take place next to the Lagoon. Manabush said that he wanted to be a tree with branche

The Day I almost Lost My Friend: Week 10 Story

Image
Welcome you guys, this secret story is a little weird so be prepared. I remember it was at the weekend! My childhood friend Patrick and I always go jelly fishing at Bikini Jelly Park. It is like the equivalent of golfing for you humans. Only this time I noticed Patrick a little frustrated with me for some reason. Normally, we are having a good time but this time he seemed bothered about something. We met at the Krusty Krab to grab lunch before we went jelly fishing and the first thing he asked was,  Why is the show called "Spongebob Square Pants" and not "Patrick Star Pants" ?  In my mind, I was like " Oh, for Krab sake!". I told him the show was mine because I worked hard to get this role. I decided to be nice and tell him he could have the title of the show if he brought three things to me. I told him he had to bring me Plankton, the Goofy Goober, and the secret treasure and I will let him have the title of the show. Patrick replied, "How in the

Reading A : West African Tales.

Image
This week I decided to take a dive into the West African stories. I am starting with " How We Got the Name "Spider Tales"  " The stories that were told are,  predominately about Nyankupon, the chief gods. However, the spider wanted the stories to be told about him. The spider also known as Anansi asked the chief for the stories to be told about him. In order for him to grant his wish the spider had to  bring him three things. This reminds me of a brag. "You scratchy back I will scratch yours". The spider cleverly fulfilled Nyankupon wish. He gave tricked the animals into following him to Nyankupon. He was impressed so he let the rest  of the stories be told about him. I think that I can use this story and make patrick the spider and spongebob squarepants the Nyankupon. I think I want to have patrick complain about being the main character of the show.  Spider Tales

Week 8 Progress

Image
As I look back on the first 8 weeks of the class, I am not impressed with the progress I have made. I was having a hard time keeping up with everything. I am taking 18 hours and i was working two jobs during the beginning of the semester. I finally got rid of my old job. Therefore, I have been able to take the time to catch up and do homework on the weekends. Right now I am most proud of my project setup. The assignment that I enjoy the most is reading the new stories. I had a little bit of trouble with creating my website for my story book but I finally tired a different browser and I was able to get my problems fixed.  The second half of the semester I want to focus on making a good schedule for all of my classes and sticking to my schedule. I am anticipating on doing at least two extra credit assignments to make up some of the points that I missed at the beginning.  I do want to try to make stories that I can relate to a video snippet that they already have out with spongeb

Week 8 Comments and Feedback

Image
I think the overall quality of comments and feedback that I receive on my stories are very positive. Most of my comments are encouraging rather than constructive. I find when my classmates give me suggestions or ask me questions about my story, I think deeper about what I wrote. I would rate the comments that I leave "Good" but can be better! My comments are usually encouraging but I think I should challenge my classmates more and ask them questions about the stories they write.  I do think, when we read our classmates blogs and introductions we get a chance to get to know our classmates. Sometimes, it is hard to know your classmates when you are taking an online class. Laura did a great job on setting that part of the class up.  I need to do more research on the story and maybe even the cultural background behind the story. It is important to know the why behind the stories to fully understand what the author is saying.  Never Failures

The Squirrel and the Spider: Reading Notes B

Image
This story is about a squirrel that works really hard cultivating a very nice farm. The spider was impressed with the work the squirrel had done. The spider wondered why there was not a road to the fine place. The spider was taking from the crops and the squirrel noticed. This reminds me of a person being manipulative. The spider claimed that the fields were his when the squirrel told him they are his fields. The father crow came to the rescue.  squirrel The Squirrel and the Spider I Like this story because it has a squirrel in it. I could do a story about Sandy from spongebob and keep the stories similar. I am thinking changing the ending to where the squirrel has justice.
