Reading Notes B: Manabush and the Great Fish
I decided to read Manabush and the Great Fish this story was edited by Katherine Berry Judson (1914). This story comes from Myths and Legends of the Mississippi Valley and the Great Lakes .
Manabush had a brother named Wolf who died. However, he realized that a he was not alone. There were children of Nokomis who were his aunts and uncles.
The evil manidoes annoyed the people and Manabush wanted to kill them. I remember in the past stories the manidoes was the reason why his brother died. So, they have bad blood.
The evil manidoes (Anamaqkiu) would not let any of the people near the water. So Manabush approached the chief and said he will destroy him but the smaller manidoes came and made the water return quickly and they all disappeared. Manabush then went and created a canoe and yelled for the Great Fish to come and swallow him. The Great Fish did just that ! He looked around and many of his family members were inside of the fish. Lol!
Manabush then created a hole in the fish and he had to swim to the shore. Once he reached the shore many of the animals on the inside began to sing and climb out of the fish. The birds also helped the captured animals and began to pick at the fishes flesh. All the animals became free.
