Wikipedia Trail: Pandita Ramabai

Image
I found Pandita Ramabai on Dr.Gibbs twitter. There  is an article  about her traveling around India in the 19th century to give lectures on women's emancipation and established one of the country's first women's shelters and schools.  I was intrigued because she is an activist. I look up to any woman who has enough courage to stand up for anything. She defied many of the odds in her time. She learned the Sanskrit which was reserved for men only. She also was an Indian woman who decided to convert ti Christianity. People referred to her as a Pandit. I wasn't sure what that meant so I searched it. A pandit is a woman who is the wife of a Brahmin scholar or a teacher of and field of knowledge in Hinduism.  This article continued to talk about a sanskrit. I have heard of a sanskrit before but I did not know the true meaning of it. I searched sanskrit and it is a language of ancient India. It is the predominant language of principle texts of Buddhism and Jainism. P...

Extra Credit Reading : The King o' the Cats

Image
This story is apart of the  English Fairy Tales (2) unit  written by Joseph Jacobs. This story is about sexton's wife and her big black cat who waited for the master to come and he came running in yelling, " Who's Tommy Tildrum?". He wanted to know who Tommy Tildrum was because he fell a sleep in a grave who belonged to Mr. Fordyce. He woke up from Miaou from a cat that looked like Old Tom. The cats wanted him to tell Tom Tildrum that Tim Toidrum's dead. He did not know who Tom was so he couldn't tell anything. Tom spoke and said "What -- old Tom dead! Then I am the King o' the cats" I like these stories because they are unpredictable. I would have never thought this story was going to end that way. I thought the cats carrying the coffin was going to be violent in some way. If I were to re-write that story I would definitely do that! I also think the ending of the story was a little bad. It ended with the cat running up the chimney. I fee...

Story Telling : SpongeMom Know's

Image
I can recall, when I was a little sponge, my mother would get up every morning and cook breakfast for my father and I. My mother would cook some pancakes, biscuits with fresh jelly jam, bacon, sausage and eggs. Those were the best days of my life. While she was cooking I would be outside rolling around on my skateboard. She would yell out the kitchen window when the food was ready. She was the best mother ever.  Just as frequent as she would cook breakfast, she would say,"Now, SpongeBob you be a good boy today and STAY AWAY from the skate park down town". I never really understood why she would tell me that everyday. Me, being the good boy that I was, I never went to the skate park downtown. It was time to go to school after breakfast and I saw the bus parked outside the house. I asked my mother if it was okay that I rode my skate board to school. Surprisingly she said, "Yes, SpongeBob. Be safe son.".  I screamed out, "YOUR'E THE BEST MOM!...

Reading Notes Part B: Mr.Miacca

Image
This story,  Mr.Miacca  comes from the storybook  English Fairy Tales  told by Joseph Jacobs.  This story is about a boy who did not listen to his mother. He was sometimes a good boy and sometimes a bad boy. He decided not to listen to his mother when she told him not to go in the street by himself or he might get caught by Mr.Miacca. Mr.Miacca is known for capturing kids. That is exactly what he did with him.  In my story I want SpongeBob to play the little boy. I want to  make the story a little more interesting. I actually want SpongeBob to put up a hard fight, unlike the little boy did. He managed to talk Mrs.Miacca into letting him go get some pudding for her from his mothers house. He had finally escaped. He continued to be good and not go around the corner. However, one day again he went around the corner and got caught again.  He ended up getting his leg chopped off and put in the pot.  I like this story but I feel like...

Reading Notes Part A: Johnny-Cake

Image
This story, Johnny-Cake  comes from the  English Fairy Tales  by Joseph Jacobs.  This story is about a little boy who was supposed to watch the Johnny-Cake bake in the oven. However, he did not do a good job of doing so. His mother and father asked him to watch it while they went outside and dug up potatoes. I think this story is humorous because the Johnny-Cake is not actually a cake. It is a character that is made out of dough. I want to make sure when I re-tell this story that I keep the humor in it. I am not sure what I might have run out of SpongeBobs house but I definitely want to keep this part of the story the same.  Later on in this story the little Johnny-Cake wan past well diggers and told them he outran an old man and woman and a little boy. He said he could out run them too.  I just thought about what I can replace the Johnny-Cake with. I want to replace him with a live Jelly-fish and have him make grape jam instead of cake. I ca...
