Reading Notes A: Manabozho and West

The story that I am going to read is Manabozho and West edited by Katherine Berry Judson (1914). This story comes from Myths and Legends of the Mississippi Valley and the Great Lakes.

Manabozoho is a boy who lived with his grandmother. One day he heard the noise of an owl and he asked his grandmother what the noise was and she said it was a bird. He thought to himself how is his grandmother is so wise. Then he realized he did not have a mother. At this point of the story I began to think about the episode of SpongeBob when he would always run to his grandmothers house for her cookies. I wonder if I could combine these two stories together.

His grandmother Nokomis told him his mother died when he was young and that his father is West and his three brothers are North, East, and South.

I was surprised when the story mentioned Manabozo wanted to visit/ punish his father for not being kind to his mother. He pretended to be glad when he ran into his father.

His father told him his fear of the black stone on the Earth. Then Manabozho said his fear is the root of the apukwa, the bulrush.

They both began to fight and they each threatened each other with their fears.
Manabozho thew the rock at his father and it shattered. His father cried out for him not to kill him because he is immortal and that he should kill monsters and evil things.

His father then made him the Northwest wind.

I was not impressed with this story . They literally left it off. Did Manabozho at least try to kill him??? If I re-do this story I will add on to the end definitely .
