Week 7: The Sponge Who Envied Squid
It's the end of another day at the Crusty Crab and
I still did not get tipped. Do you have a minute to let me vent? I am going to
start from the day I was hired! I can remember the day I was hired like it was
yesterday. I ran into my boss, Mr.Crab at Bikini Mart and he offered me a job
at the crusty crab as a cook. He told me the pay would be good the longer I
stayed. As a cook, it is my duty to cut all the vegetables, and prep the food.
It is also my duty to clean out the greaser and the kitchen. I have to cook the
food fresh as well! This job is very demanding. How is it, that I only get
$11.00 an hour and Squidward gets his pay check and tips. I never really understood
that because my job is very demanding. I always go home with a smile no matter how upset
this makes me. I usually get up for a morning run but I decided to do it at
night today. As I was running through Bikini Bottom I hear some sound noises
coming from Crusty Crab. I saw Squidward inside the big trash dump doing
something. I ran over there to make sure he was okay and he was cleaning the
inside of the dump. I asked, " What are you doing?' He replied,
"Every other day after work I have to clean the inside of the trash
dump." "Why do you have to do that?" He angrily
replied, " Because there was a customer that complained about a year ago
about the smell that was coming from the dumpster." I began to think, maybe I shouldn't complain about him getting tips.
Here I am leisurely taking my run and he is still at work scrubbing the inside
of the dumpster. I would never have the energy to do this every other day. I
guess I should not complain about my duties and not getting tips. Squid ward
deserves every tip he gets. He is basically working over-time off the clock.
Authors Note: The Ox who envied the Pig is a story about the Ox envying the Pig because the Pig gets the good food to eat. The Ox works much harder than the Pig. However, what the Ox didn't know is the Pig was being fattened up to be feasted on. I changed the ending a little in this story. I had Spongebob envying Squidward because he gets tips at the cash register and he does not work as hard as spongebob. What Spongebob didn't know was, Spongebob Squidward does deserve the tips because he has clean out the dumpster every other day after work.

Hi Taylor! I appreciate the moral at the center of both your story and the original one. I was a huge fan of Spongebob Squarepants when I was younger so this story was pretty entertaining from the get-go for that reason. I like the stream of consciousness style of writing you've employed here, delivering us an extended monologue that gifts your story a theatrical element, which is awesome! I think the ending could have been handled better, you demonstrated the moral but the last sentences feel like an abrupt way to end a story. Other than that, I enjoyed this a lot! Thanks for the story, Taylor!
ReplyDeleteHi Taylor.
ReplyDeleteI did watch SpongeBob when I was younger so I know the background of your characters, with that being said it is not my favorite show. I feel like the structure of your paragraph could be a little different so that it is easier to read, instead of one long paragraph. I also agree with Deagan in that the last few sentences were rushed to end the story. From reading your note about the Ox who envied the Pig, I like how you was still able to convey the message from the original version.
Hey Taylor.
ReplyDeleteIt's crazy, Spongebob is always such a cheerful and delightful character, so it's hard to see him being interested in the money as much as he was in this story. It followed the plot line of the original story well, so I really enjoyed it! I felt bad for Squidward at the end, which I usually did in the show anyway, but this time it was more sad. So good job also bring out emotion from the reader.
Hey Taylor,
ReplyDeleteI liked that you chose SpongeBob as your topic to write about. This was not something I would have though about! It is so strange reading this and hearing how normal SpongeBob sounds since he is so childlike in the show! If I could make a suggestion I would say to maybe rethink the paragraph formatting. It can be a little difficult to read when it is just one long paragraph. Really creative idea and such a fun story! Good job!
